Stop and smell the roses

Stop and smell the roses today! Spend some time in Nature and feel the uplifting effect of basking in its beauty.

Aim to do this on a regular basis. Don’t have time to take yourself off the beaten track? Train your eyes to seek out the beauty surrounding you – you can find it just about anywhere.

Coping Strategy #6: “Know Your Boundaries”

This is simple – stop and identify what lies within your control and what lies beyond your control. Pour your energy, effort and attention into what you can control and take action here. Acknowledge and surrender where you know you have no influence. Worrying, efforting, wishing, resisting… are all a complete waste of your time here.

Get to know your boundaries, respect them and feel how this simplifies life – where you direct your attention, the choices you make and the actions you embark on.

Just one week to go of this ‘8 weeks to a better bodymind’ challenge. Knuckle down and last the distance with me! I hope you are feeling tangible, positive change already.

Coping Strategy #5: “Put a Ring Around it”

Put a ring around it… This remains the single best bit of advice I received when I was struggling a few years back. Use it to isolate the part of your life that is challenging you. Recognise that it’s not everything, it is just this facet. Or if it does genuinely feel like everything, acknowledge that the stress you are facing is finite. Even if you don’t know how long it will continue, know that it won’t last forever.

There are lots of different applications of this tool – keep it in mind and see how you can put it to good use. I’d love to hear them.

Coping Strategy #3: Break free from overthinking

Ever feel like you’re stuck on a mental treadmill and can’t get off?

Here are my top 5 tried and tested strategies to help you break free from overthinking:

  1. Eat something (make sure you’re not hangry).
  2. Distract yourself with something engaging and lifegiving (your breath, uplifting music, work you enjoy, movement).
  3. Write it down (sometimes this can get to the nub of what’s bothering you or help put it in context).
  4. Ask yourself: “Will this matter in a year? If yes, ask “what does it teach me?”
  5. Book in with a coach or supportive friend and commit to taking action.

Coping Strategy #2: Navigating Setbacks

A smooth and happy life is not about an absence of bumps in the road – it’s about how well you handle them. How effectively do you deal with setbacks?

When faced with a setback, ask yourself these three questions:

1. Is the setback temporary or will its effect last forever?

2. Is the setback a result of everything you do or just one thing you tried?

3. Are you solely responsible for this setback or were there other factors (such as time, people, and resources) involved?

Now dust yourself down, take a few deep breaths and refocus.
